WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR CHRISTIAN UNIFIED?
Christian Unified Schools are a very special place to work because of the people that have been called here. Our staff loves the Lord and each has a true calling to work here working in their gifting. We have developed an incredibly supportive community around our students and families that allows them to take risks during a critical time in life, and develop strong foundational relationships as they consider their future path. God in everything here and I love that about our school!

Why Do You Choose to Work for Christian Unified?
This is where God calls me to be. It is such a joy watching young souls and minds grow into the young adults God has created them to be. It’s a joy to see students learn, succeed, and flourish and I love ASL and Jesus. So what better place than CHS to do what I love, teaching who I love, to serve the One I love.

Interesting facts:
I have been to Ethiopia for 3 summers on mission trips to teach English and I love to travel.
When I am not teaching I treasure spending time with my two dearest friends. They both have 7 kids, so our visits are full of adventures. One of these friends is a Kurdish Syrian Muslim refugee with a daughter who is Deaf. Her friendship is a gift from God; though we don’t have language, culture, or religion in common, we do share love for each other. I also can often be found with my head in a book or studying and discussing apologetics.

Why Do You Choose to Work for Christian Unified?
I believe in the whole-person approach to teaching, but this was never completely true for me in the public school setting. Now, as a teacher at Christian Junior High, I am able to truly fulfill this philosophy of teaching as I can teach academic subject matter, social-emotional concepts, and explore the spiritual life.

Interesting facts:
I am passionate about music and have played guitar since the age of 13. As a pastor’s kid, I began leading Bible Studies and leading worship at an early age. I am also a runner and have run every San Diego Half Marathon since its inaugural race in 2012. I also love to travel, explore, investigate, and learn.

Life Verse:
Galatians 5:16 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Why do you work for Christian Unified?
I love educating people, both academically and spiritually. Theology is my first love, but History brings its own unique focus on God’s story through humanity, and I believe both are necessary to self-reflect. First, I believe that my job as an educator is to educate students on the rich history of our great nation and highlight the brokenness that we as a people have experienced, as we illuminate why the highlights and lowlights have occurred. Secondly, I believe that teaching students skills in reading, writing, and articulating is paramount and serves all students from all interest levels and fields. Finally, I am not interested in merely shaping minds, but also shaping hearts as history can challenge us personally and spiritually to see our own opportunities to improve and honor God in all we do, both personally and collectively. Therefore, I desire to faithfully inspire students to love reading, especially theological truths, and to see God’s hand in all circumstances.

Interesting facts:
I married my high-school sweetheart.
I have three daughters.
My entire life I disliked running and reading, but in the last few years, I cannot get enough of both.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR CHRISTIAN UNIFIED?

Back to School Message from Mrs. Lanz

Dear Christian Jr/Sr High Parents,

Welcome Back! We’re excited to start the school year and welcome you and your students to our CHS/CJHS Community. Our teachers have been back on campus this week, setting up their online and regular classrooms, and are excited for the start of school on Wednesday, August 19th, You’ll see details below on what the first week of school looks like. For the next two weeks in addition to academics, we will focus on community and relationship building with students and teachers. We know that as we look forward, this foundation in our community will be important when we do come back on campus. Our staff has been working this week on building on the Distance Learning Program we implemented in the spring, with some improvements including more consistency in workload and assignments across departments and increased support and individualization for your students.

Attached you will see some important information about next week:

Book pick up will take place Monday and Tuesday, August 17 and 18th. Please plan to arrive at the time listed on the attached schedule (the reverse side of the News and Notes document). If this time does not work for you, please email Rose.vanhouten@christianunified.org to arrange an alternate time. You have been assigned times to avoid large groups. Please plan to wear a mask and wait outside the library when you arrive.

Junior High Virtual Welcome will be held on Monday, August 17th. An email will be sent to students and parents on Monday with a link. Students will learn the basics tricks and tips to have a successful start online at CJHS.

High School Mobile Learning Orientation on Tuesday, August 18th. An email will be sent to parents and students on Tuesday with the link. High School students will be welcomed and introduced to the basics of online learning at CHS.

First Day of classes will be on Wednesday, August 19th at 7:40 AM online. We will follow the attached 8-Bell schedule so please print it out to support your student in attending the live online classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Your student will need to be dressed for school, have access to a device with internet access, and a desk or other quiet area set aside for school hours. Teachers will be online with your students for synchronous learning for at least 30 minutes of each class. (If your student needs a device or internet access please contact amy.worley@christianunified.org).

Patriot Connect will be held on Thursday, August 20th from 9:00-11:00 AM online (Grades 7-12). The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for students to connect with our staff and other students with similar interests. Students will receive information on how to attend this event in their Bible classes on the first day of school. This does not replace our annual Patriot Games, which will be scheduled when we return to campus.

As we partner together in this rapidly changing situation, you can count on regular communication and updates. I know how important it is to you to have the information you need to support your student. Thank you for your patience and support as we walk through this time together in our CHS/CJHS community, and trust in Christ’s timing for our school re-opening. See you at book pick up!

August 12 Update

Dear CUSSD Parents,

None of us could have imagined when the COVID-19 virus made its way to San Diego County earlier in the year, that the start of the new school year would be filled with questions of how we should conduct school. However, this has been and is our reality. We have been working tirelessly to keep up with the rapid and ever-changing guidance and regulations regarding how to open our school. This letter is the first of likely several “status updates” you will receive so we can ensure that everyone is kept informed.

First, I want to communicate that we are praying earnestly for you and your family as we navigate these murky waters. We know this has been tough on you, so we are praying for God’s grace and peace in your situation. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Second, Christian Unified Schools of San Diego (CUSSD) has filed a waiver on behalf of our elementary age students with the San Diego Public Health office to obtain an exemption to the current statewide mandate, which is requiring distance learning for all schools. The waiver is under current review and we should learn the official decision in the coming days. What does receiving a waiver mean? The elementary schools are currently scheduled to begin the school year online on August 18th, but as soon as CUSSD is granted this waiver, the elementary schools will be permitted to transition to in-person learning at school. We believe the waiver could happen very quickly, so please join us in praying and seeking the Lord’s favor in this pending matter so we can bring the younger students back to in-person school as soon as possible.

Third, after speaking to several attorneys and several Christian school administrators, with much prayer and contemplation, CUSSD has joined with other Christian schools to file a lawsuit in the State of California to challenge Governor Newsom’s orders, guidance and directives regarding the current school restrictions. While this is unfamiliar territory for us, we know that we must fight for what is right for our students and families, who are very important to us. While the details of the lawsuit are confidential, our attorneys have communicated with us that there could be a ruling in early September. What does this mean for you and your children? It means we will begin the Jr High and High School year online August 19th. We know that this is not ideal, however, if we receive a successful ruling in this lawsuit, CUSSD would be entitled to resume in-person learning for all grades. While only the Lord knows the outcome of this lawsuit, we are praying that the court(s) will rule quickly and in our favor. We hope you will be in prayer over this important case.

Lastly, we all need to remind ourselves that God is bigger than all the chaos, confusion and hard decisions that have come with this virus. We can be confident that God hears the cries of our hearts and will faithfully lead and guide. “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17). Thank you for your prayers and for standing with us.

Be on the lookout for campus-specific communications in the coming days.

Blessings,

Dr. David Jeremiah

Family Statement of Faith

  • The Statement of Faith does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs.  The Bible itself, as the inspired, inerrant, plenary, and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe.  For purposes of CUSSD’s faith, doctrine, practice, policy, and discipline, Shadow Mountain Community Church is CUSSD’s final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.
  • We believe that there is one God eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, and His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through the shedding of His blood, in His bodily resurrection on the third day, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and In His personal pre-millennial return to rapture His Church before the Tribulation and His glorious appearing to set up His Millennial Kingdom.
  • We believe that salvation is by grace alone through faith, apart from works by the merit of the shed blood of Christ, and that the born-again believer is eternally secure in Christ.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life, and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We believe in the individual priesthood of the believer.
  • We believe life begins at conception.
  • We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning; the uniting of one biological man and one biological woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Gen. 2:18-25.)  We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a biological man and a biological woman who are married to each other. (1 Cor. 6:18; 7:2-5; Heb. 13:4.)  We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.
  • We believe that the Scripture dictates standards of sexual behavior. The unique roles of the male and female are clearly defined in Scripture. Any promiscuity, homosexuality, gender identity issues or other deviations from Biblical principles is a sin that is offensive to God (Matt. 5:18-19; I Cor. 6: 9-10, 19-20; Eph. 5:3-5; 1 Thess. 4:3-8).
