Teacher Feature: Mr. Gift Q & A

Interview by Ava Rogers

Q: What is your favorite thing about our school?
A: My favorite thing about our school is its faithfulness to scripture. Scripture is authoritative, and believers should follow what the Bible teaches. It’s really easy to see what happens when people begin to drift away from the Bible and its teachings.

Q: Have you taught prior to Christian?
A: Truthfully, no. My background is in coffee and youth ministry. I’ve been involved in youth ministry since 2018. There’s a funny story about how I got the Bible teacher position here at CHS, but I’ll only share it in person.

Q: What inspired you to teach Bible? What has been your most favorite memory so far, and why?
A: Growing up, I didn’t know what the Gospel was. I was always told to either believe in God or go to hell. Unfortunately, no one ever told me which god to believe in, or even what to believe. They just said, “believe in God or you’re gonna burn.” It wasn’t until I moved to San Diego and my youth pastor walked me through the Gospel that I believed, and my life has never been the same. I fell in love with theology in college, and because of the professors I had at San Diego Christian, I wanted to be a Bible teacher just like them. One of my favorite memories was near the end of the school year last May. One of my classes stood out. They were asking amazing questions and participating in everything. They made an early and unforgettable impact on me as a teacher.

Q: Do you have any pets?
A: Yes, I have a dog named Gordon that my wife and I got in April. Crazy story: while I was up at River Trip with the high school ministry, my wife called and told me that our dog had parvo. What’s even more astonishing is that we had only had him for a week. Fortunately, he survived and has been a great addition to our family.

Q: Lastly, what advice or wisdom would you share with your students?
A: I would encourage them to walk with the Lord. I’ve been around the church and Christians my entire life, and I truly believe that Jesus saves. I’ve witnessed beautiful transformation stories of how God has drawn people to Himself. I would also reassure them that God doesn’t expect you to make yourself perfect; He does the perfecting in us (Philippians 2:12-13). There’s so much more I could say, but I’d encourage anyone interested to come hang out in Bible 9 if you have the time.

Q: What are your passions and hobbies?
A: I love craft coffee shops. Every Saturday, my wife and I pick a coffee shop to visit. It’s been our thing since we started dating in 2018. I also enjoy playing the drumset and taking pictures with my camera.
