Welcome to Lip Sync 2023! This year’s lip sync competition theme was “Childhood Channels.” Each class performed songs from kids’ channels they grew up watching: the freshmen represented Cartoon Network, the sophomores showcased PBS Kids, the juniors highlighted Nickelodeon and Nick Jr., while the seniors chose Disney. Notably, senior boys and senior girls competed against one another. In addition to the class lip syncs, our CHS teachers, the cheer team, and the trio “Kingdom Come” also gave performances.
Seniors and ASB members Eva Giorgi and Braxton Pingleton served as emcees for the event, hosting between lip sync performances. Spoof commercials produced by Advance Film added humor, with themes ranging from using spoons for fishing to teachers battling it out in Super Smash Bros.
A new voting system was introduced to decide the winning class. It combined the decisions of the judges with a general vote, allowing everyone to cast their vote for the class they believed should win. This led to questions about the fairness, considering larger class sizes could potentially garner more votes.
Despite their best efforts, the senior class of 2024 secured 2nd place, edged out by the juniors. In the face-off between the senior boys and senior girls’ lip sync performances, the boys, with only a week of practice and having faced criticism during the initial admin review, outperformed the girls, claiming a well-deserved victory. Their performance is now hailed as one of the greatest underdog stories in lip sync history. With iconic songs like “It’s Raining Men” by the Weather Girls, “All Star” from Shrek, “Bet On It” from High School Musical 2, and “Never Say Never” by Justin Bieber (also the theme for the Karate Kid reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan), it’s not surprising that they not only won but also captivated the audience, impressing even the senior girls with every moment.
The Lip Sync Competition of 2023 was truly memorable and worth participating in.
