Culinary Arts is one of the many new classes that were introduced in the 2023-2024 school year. This class is considered the next step after completing Home Economics 2. In an interview with Mrs Ober, she reflects on how this course was inspired, saying, “The students and my love for cooking inspired the creation of this class. I love teaching the students the correct cooking terminology and cooking techniques.”
Mrs. Ober has worked really hard to make this class a possibility for students. When asked about what she is most excited for, she states, “I look forward to every class. I love to see what the students create. However, the Catering project that we’re working on right now and the Christmas Fine Arts Night are the big events I am looking forward to.”
Although Culinary Arts is considered the next step after Home Economics, there is a vast difference between the two. Mrs Ober provides us with further insight, saying, “Culinary Arts is different in a couple of ways. First, (it) is project-based. For example, the students are working on a catering project for the Cross Country banquet. Second, Culinary Arts is only cooking… Students learn advanced baking and cooking techniques that we improve with every class. In Home Economics, the students learn basic cooking, basic baking, sewing, interior design, and child development.”
Overall, this new, specialized course provides students with a new opportunity to engage their cooking and baking skills at a higher level, potentially offering a space for them to find a passion for cuisine, and maybe even a future in a professional kitchen!
