“Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. still ring true today. At Christian Unified Schools, we desire greatness for each student, and we believe, like Dr. King, that one way to achieve greatness is through Christian service.
At Christian High School, students learn how to apply the Biblical
worldview they have acquired in the classroom by completing service to
the community as part of Christian High School’s Servant Leadership
program. This is yet another way that we are teaching students to
think, learn and live from a Biblical worldview.
Although only ninth and tenth graders are required to complete 10-15 hours of service to his/her community through serving in a community organization, hospital, church or one of the other hundreds of appropriate places; all of our students are encouraged to become involved in the Patriot Servants program.
All students should keep in mind that, while it is true that colleges look favorably on service to one’s community, it is more important that the service be a part of a bigger “story.” For example, if a student wants to go into the medical field, then he/she should choose to serve in a hospital, doctor’s office or nursing home. Typically, in the application process, colleges consider hours served above and beyond what the high school requires, and where a student has served is often critical in the decision-making process
In addition to the sites included on the “List of Approved Sites”, our student-led Patriot Servants organization coordinates and searches out opportunities for the student body to participate in programs and service activities throughout San Diego County. The monthly meetings are held at lunch time on the first Wednesday of the month in the choir room. Please come back to this page on our website and check the calendar regularly for a list of the scheduled events for the school year. Students should attend the monthly meeting to sign up for the upcoming projects. The faculty advisors will use Email to notify students of the meetings, as well as upcoming events.
Here are the highlights of the Patriot Servants “for-credit” portion of the program:
- All information regarding Patriot Servants can be found on our website. Links to the forms are in the left menu.
- All service hours must be PRE-APPROVED unless served at one of the locations on our Approved Places of Service List found on the website. Hours not pre-approved will not count towards this requirement.
- Hours served are to be noted on the Hours Served Form located on the website. Hours Served Forms should be turned in to the office as hours are completed. Due dates for the 2009-2010 school year are as follows:
- Minimum of 3 hours completed by November 20, 2009
- Minimum of 6 hours completed by March 26, 2010
- Minimum of 10 hours completed by April 30th, 2009 for freshmen.
- Sophomores will need to complete 15 hours prior to April 30th, 2010.
(Exceptions to these dates are students who are planning a missions trip or one-time event at some point during the school year. If your child is planning such a trip or event, please inform the school office.)
- Hours may be served during the summer for the following year. Vacation Bible School, Indian Hills Camp volunteers, and summer church-sponsored missions trips can count for credit hours. \
